Do You Tip in the UAE?

Tipping in the UAE is common and appreciated, though the culture varies depending on the type of establishment. The UAE is a cosmopolitan, international destination and tipping norms have been shaped by the many nationalities who live and work there. A 10–15% tip at restaurants is welcomed, and hotel staff and taxi drivers all appreciate additional gratuity.

Many restaurants in Dubai and Abu Dhabi automatically add a 10% service charge to bills. Always check before adding an additional tip — if the charge is already there, any further tip is purely a personal gesture. Note that service charges in UAE restaurants do not always go directly to the serving staff — a cash tip handed directly to your server ensures they receive it.

The UAE workforce is heavily international, with many hospitality workers from South Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa who rely on tips to supplement relatively modest base salaries. A generous tip in the UAE makes a genuine difference to service staff.

Frequently Asked Questions — Tipping in UAE / Dubai

Yes — tipping is common and appreciated in Dubai and across the UAE. While not legally required, a 10–15% tip at restaurants, 10 AED for taxi drivers and 10–20 AED for hotel housekeeping are all standard practices. Many restaurants add a service charge automatically, so always check your bill before adding more.

If a 10% service charge has not already been added to your bill, a 10–15% tip is appropriate. In Dubai's upscale restaurants where a service charge is added, an additional 5–10% in cash to your server is a generous gesture that ensures the individual serving you receives it directly rather than it being pooled. On a 200 AED bill, 20–30 AED is a standard tip.

Yes — hotel tipping is well-established in Dubai. Porter tips of 5–10 AED per bag are expected when bags are carried to your room. Housekeeping tips of 10–20 AED per night are very appreciated, particularly at luxury hotels where staff work hard. For concierge services that go above and beyond, 20–50 AED is a generous gesture.

Rounding up the fare is the minimum — on a 23 AED fare, giving 25 or 30 AED is standard. For Careem and Uber, tipping via the app after the ride is appreciated. In extreme summer heat, when drivers are working particularly challenging conditions, a more generous tip is a kind gesture. Airport transfer drivers appreciate 20–30 AED.

Always tip in UAE Dirhams (AED). Foreign currency is not useful to UAE service workers for small amounts. ATMs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi dispense AED; ensure you have small denomination notes (5, 10 and 20 AED) available for tipping purposes. Large hotels and restaurants accept card payments but cash tips are far preferable for staff.

During Ramadan, many restaurants and hospitality venues reduce service hours, and some Muslim staff may be fasting. Tipping customs do not change during Ramadan — continuing to tip normally is perfectly appropriate and respectful. In fact, given the additional challenges of fasting while working, a generous tip during Ramadan is particularly appreciated.
